VBAC

VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER CESAREAN

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A VBAC FOR BABY?

  • Baby is exposed to beneficial vaginal organisms (to strengthen baby's microbiome)

  • Breastfeeding is more likely to be successful and last through infancy

  • Baby is more likely to have the necessary skin-to-skin contact immediately upon birth

  • Contractions stimulate and prepare the baby for breathing outside the womb

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF A VBAC?

  •  0.5%-1.4% risk of uterine rupture (VBAC & VBA2C)

  • 0.17% risk of hysterectomy

  • 1.24% risk of blood transfusion

  • Potential need for a repeat unplanned Cesarean birth (25% compared to 20% for a first time mom)

  • Birth related deaths of VBAC is 0.1%, birth related deaths of elective repeat Cesarean is %0.01

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A VBAC FOR MOM?

  • No major abdominal surgery or long hospital stay

  • Helps avoid the increasing risks with each Cesarean birth, most commonly placenta issues

  • Quicker recovery time

  • Less chance of postpartum infection

  • Higher likelihood of having a satisfying and fulfilling birth due to more participation

  • Get to experience vaginal childbirth

WHAT MAKES A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR VBAC?

  • Low transverse incision for prior Cesarean

  • At least 18 months postpartum

  • No previous uterine ruptures

  • Previous successful vaginal birth

HOW CAN I INCREASE MY CHANCES OF A SUCESSFUL VBAC?

  • Find a caregiver who is knowledgeable and supportive of VBAC

  • Hire a birth doula with VBAC knowledge (almost all doulas)

  • Prepare your mind and body for vaginal birth

  • Read positive birth stories of VBAC

  • Determine WHERE you will give birth (hospital, birth center, or home)

  • Learn the facts (EBB, VBACKLINK, ACOG, NIH)

  • Avoid induction

  • Stay healthy and moving

  • Surround yourself with people who believe in you

"VBAC= Very Courageous and Brave, not because it is risky give birth, but because it takes courage to stand up for yourself and your baby in the face of profound opposition"
